The great majority of explosive athletic movements we see on the field of play require the use of multiple muscle groups rapidly acting together simultaneously on multiple planes to complete a sports movement.  Does it make sense then to spend the majority of the time in the weight room isolating single muscle groups and working them slowly through single planes of motion?  The obvious answer is "No".  Weight training for strength development is essential in athletics and it is the most effective means to target and strengthen individual muscles.  However, when we isolate and strengthen individual muscles in the weight room performing exercises that don't mimic what we are doing on the field of play, it makes sense that those muscles should not be optimized for performance neurologically or physically in competition.
